Artists on the Christmas: Rhythms of the Holy Land CD:

It was inspired in part by famed Bay Area drummer Rami Ziadeh, who is a Palestinian Christian, born near Bethlehem, on Christmas day! Desert Wind thanks Rami for joining in this project!

This work is part of a continuum as a universal prayer to greet the new millennium. Desert Wind thinks of this as their gift to the world community. While other work has included a variety of acclaimed work within various spiritual traditions, “Christmas: Rhythms of the Holy Land” was created to extend their energy into the beautiful Christian tradition that brings such incredible joy to so many! All of the recording artists have impressive individual bios, and several travelled from around the country to join in this recording project.

Band Members on the Christmas Album: Alan Scott Bachman, Andalin Bachman, Rami Ziadeh, Jonathan Kessler, Brett “Angus” Bowen, George Grant, Christian Parry, Rajab Juma, and Amy Faust.

Instruments include: Boston Steinway Grand Piano, Silver/Gold Flute, Ebony Flute, Mandolins, Mandola, Mandocello, Martin & Nylon Classical Guitars, Alto Recorder, Percussion, Harpsichord, Keyboards, Vocals, Tablas, Djembe, Riq (Egyptian Tambourine), Dumbek, Tar, Trap Drums, Persian Zarb, Oriental Bells, and of course, SLEIGH BELLS!

This music includes the virtuoso hand drumming of Rami Ziadeh, a Palestinian Christian who with Bethlehem roots was born on Christmas day.

Acclaimed fluist Andalin Bachman shares in the joy of this musical mission.

Add Rajab Juma, born in Libya, and we have a powerful blend of exotic and passionate world rhythms.

Jonathan Kessler’s work with great Arabic, Turkish, and Armenian musicians helps create the unique rhythmical foundation for this music, which includes traditional Christmas songs PLUS “Dance of the Angels,” “Christmas Peace” and “Tikkun Olam” written by Alan Scott Bachman.

“The little Drummer Boy” (C) 1958, 1960 by Mills Music, Inc. and International Korwin Corp. “Gaudete,” a 16th century Christmas song, is brought to life in Desert Wind’s rare instrumental version.

Thanks to Sara Nosanchuk for her magnetic role.

Thanks, left to right: Brett “Angus” Bowen, Amy Faust, Christian Parry, George Grant, In memory of Nolan Nebeker

"The Original"

Return to the Goddess by Desert Wind

This recording had never been released on CD until the Fall of 2004, yet it had been ordered “by the hundreds” by dance instructors and their students as a cassette since originally released in the 1980’s. Alan happened to “find” the original DAT tape, and as cassettes have been essentially replaced by CDs, well, Alan decided to release this CD for Desert Wind fans who just won’t let go of the request for this music.

Alan had to actually borrow a copy of the original cassette from Thia in order to list the songs as they were originally known.

This CD is now available through the Desert Wind Website for die hard Desert Wind fans.

Our Success Stories

". . . . My take on Christmas: Rhythms of the Holy Land is that this is Christmas music as it was meant to be heard: exotic and percussive, weaving together the traditions of east and west, and accessible to all." ~ Richard Banks

" . . . the BEST thing to happen to Christmas music since Christmas itself!" ~ Jareeda Magazine Article

"The mood is joyful and optimistic. The message is celebration and hope. The genre is a blend of new age and world music. Getting right to the point with a full-bodied, toe-tapping Joy to the World, Desert Wind effectively combines the musical traditions of the Middle East and the Caribbean. This is followed by the most strangely exotic Little Drummer Boy I can remember. Particularly novel is the application of Middle Eastern rhythm, percussion and winds to western carols. My unfamiliarity with the instruments precludes much discussion, but it left me with an impression of happily hypnotic harmonies. Joined by guest artists Rami Ziadeh, Jonathan Kessler, and Rajab Juma, Desert Wind produces a sound which includes, instills, and integrates the rhythmic elements of many cultures. Also, unique to this CD are three of Alan Scott Bachman's seasonal compositions: Christmas Peace, Tikkun Olam, and the seductively soothing Dance of the Angels. My take on Christmas: Rhythms of the Holy Land is that this is Christmas music as it was meant to be heard: exotic and percussive, weaving together the traditions of east and west, and accessible to all. Seasonal without being cloying, it will be one of those CDs that can be played as early as November and on into the new year." --Richard Banks

"Christmas: Rhythms of the Holy Land is a refreshing change from the Christmas music we hear year in and year out. Familiar Christmas songs are born again with luscious ancient rhythms from the Middle East." ~ Reviewed by Ladyslipper
